Lt. Robert J Steele, Kansas City, MO, 62nd Fighter Squadron. P-47D 42-7887 LM-#. The cowl bears the artwork of Moonbeam McSwine from Al Capp’s “Dogpatch” cartoon strip although the name appears not to have been applied. It is assumed that this was another aircraft in the “Dogpatch” Flight (‘B’ Flight) of the 62nd FS. Lt. Steele became a POW whilst flying this a/c on 29 July 1943.

Additional Information

Thanks to assistance given by Nigel Julian of the 56th FG web site and Buzz Took of the Halesworth Museum, this photo of the “Moonbeam McSwine” nose art, originally listed as unknown in this gallery, has now been positively identified as belonging to Lt. Steele.
