Capt. Eugene E Barnum, Albion, NY. 61st Fighter Squadron. P-47D 42-75508 HV-S “Pistol Packin’ Mama /The Cotton Chopper”. This a/c was recoded from HV-B_ (q.v.) but it is uncertain if the assigned pilot was the same. Capt. Barnum was with the original cadre from the US and was killed in action on 2 December 1944 in 44-19739 HV-A due to a mid-air collision. Although the 56th FG red noses officially date from March 1944, the squadrons used their individual colours originally and it just so happened that the 61st FS colour was red. The photo could therefore date anytime from February 1944 onward.
