Maj. John D Landers. 38th Fighter Squadron. P-51D 44-13923 CG-O "Big Beautiful Doll". Serial number enthusiasts please see large photo for explanation.

CG-O "Big Beautiful Doll" has for long been identified as 44-13823 and thus confused with the a/c that Lt. Albert Koenig bailed out of. Close examination of the data panel visible in the rear 3/4 shot in Roger Freeman's "Mighty 8th in Colour" shows that it was in fact 44-13923 (see detail below). This is confirmed by the Special Project Number which is 92752 N for 44-13923 whereas the equivalent S.P No. for 44-13823 would have been 92742 R. Landers took this a/c with him when he went to command the 357th FG where it was recoded to B6-O.
Special thanks to Ted Damick for his foresight in recording the P-51 Special Project Numbers!
