Littlefriends.co.uk Not the best of quality but a vey interesting photo of a P-47 in 55th FG markings. This was most likely one of the P-47 a/c used post VE-Day for transition training in readiness for possible transfer to the far East, where the P-47N would have been used. Of particular interest is the obviously long service record of this particular a/c. As can be seen, this is a P-47C serial # 41-6347 which was originally the mount of Capt. Eugene W O'Neill of the 62nd Fighter Squadron, 56th Fighter Group (see photos in 56th gallery) where it was LM-O "Li'l Abner". From the 56th it served with the 495th FTG and is now seen with the 55th's CG-4 code, still bearing the "Li'l Abner" nose art.

Littlefriends.co.uk Original markings on early 55th FG P-51s - mostly D-5s. These are a carry-over from the P-38s that they replaced, i.e. 38FS - triangle; 338FS - circle; 343FS - square. The black nose colours are factory-applied although some were re-sprayed white, possibly for yellow-white checkers which in the event were were used by the F-6s of the 12TRS ( 9thAF) with the 55th FG using yellow/green. Stencilled codes were typical for 55th FG especially 38th & 338th FSs. Squadron colour rudders were in use from October 1944 (338FS & 343FS) and March 1945 (38FS).
