Lt. Pasquale J “Bud” Romano, Collingswood, NJ., 436th Fighter Squadron. P-51D 44-14576 9B-B/ “Pepe’s Pregnant Pride”. Crew chief of 9B-B/ was S/Sgt. Oren C Newton and is most likely on the left in the photo. Other crew member is currently unknown. The P-51 was named after the character Pépé le Moko from the film Algiers, played by Charles Boyer, whom Lt. Romano was fond of imitating. The “Pregnant Pride” is believed to refer to the distinctive profile of the P-51. 44-14576 was lost 11 March 1945 when Lt. Lewis C Smith bailed out 20 miles E of Lowestoft, due to engine failure, and succumbed to hypothermia despite Air-Sea Rescue being on scene within approximately 30 minutes.
