Lt. William T Gilbert Jr, 362nd Fighter Squadron. P-51B 43-6688 G4-R “Wanderin’ Willie”. This a/c was previously Maj. Arval Roberson’s G4-A “Passion Wagon” and reassigned to Gilbert when he received his new P-51D. It eventually became the two-seater “469th Baby”. Sitting to the right on the wing is Capt. John Briggs Main, a ground officer from the Headquarters Unit. It is said that the crews converted it to the two-seater following an accident, but no record of any accident can be found. It is most likely that it was a conversion of a “war weary” airframe.
