Capt. Harry R "Herky" Corey, Niagara Falls NY, 505th Fighter Squadron. P-51D 44-15467 6N-K/ (bar over) "Maureen Ann" (L) / "Maurine Ann" (R). In picture are crew chief S/Sgt. John E Earnest, Wayland IA and Sgt. George McFarlane, Abilene TX.

Photo: Nick King

The different spellings of Maureen/Maurine arose when Herky was going on a “48 hour pass” and told the crew what he wanted as the nickname for the a/c. Being uncertain of the spelling, they did it differently either side for Herky to choose when he returned, with the intention of making both sides look the same. Herky thought that the variation was a good talking point and decided to leave it as painted.
