Capt. George T Rich, Wilmington NC, 505th Fighter Squadron. P-51D 44-14023 6N-H "Chute You're Faded".

Photo: Nick King

The reason for the "odd" spelling of the a/c nickname relates to the story of Steve Ananian's ditching into the North Sea on his first mission (See Ramrod to Munster linked from the index bar). The craps call "Shoot you're faded" means that the dice can be thrown because the stake money has been covered. George changed "Shoot" to "Chute" to reflect his covering Steve and saving him by collapsing his chute with the Mustang's slipstream.
